Crown Mortgage Company, a Chicago-area mortgage lender since 1991, grew its loans by 39% in 2025 while similar lenders shrank, and it lends more to lower-income borrowers than most of them.
It made 122 loans in 2025, up from 88. Similar lenders, independent non-banks making between half and twice as many loans, saw a typical fall of 2%, and the whole market grew by 10%. Its growth was faster than about nine in ten peers. It is still far below the 613 loans it made in 2020.
Some 36.9% of its loans went to low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers, against 19.5% at similar lenders, more than at four in five of them. The share has risen from 29.5% in 2024 and 18.9% in 2020.
Conventional loans made up 92.6% of its lending, against 76.8% at peers. Loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) were 7.4%, against 17.5%. Its typical loan, $235,000, was smaller than the $305,000 at similar lenders. Purchases were 65.6% of its loans and refinances the rest; its typical rate of 6.62% sat near the middle of its peers.
It has lent in Chicago-Naperville-Elgin since 1991 and ranked 237 of 902 lenders there, behind leaders such as JPMorgan Chase Bank and Guaranteed Rate. It lends in 11 counties across Illinois and Indiana. It filed no report for 2019, a gap in the record rather than a year without lending.
