Cooperativa de Ahorro Y Credito de Lares makes small home loans in Puerto Rico, above all outside its metro areas, and its lending grew by a third in 2025, faster than most similar lenders.
Its typical loan was $85,000, against $255,000 at similar lenders, the other independent non-bank lenders making between half and twice as many loans. That is smaller than at nearly all of them. Its 48 loans came to $4.2 million. Every one was conventional, with no government-backed lending, and purchases made up 64.6%.
Its loans rose 33%, to 48 from 36, while similar lenders grew 2% and the whole market 10%. That is faster than more than four in five similar lenders. It remains below its 2022 level of 56 loans, but over five years its lending doubled, from 24.
Its biggest market is non-metro Puerto Rico, where it ranked 10 of 43 lenders. In the metro areas its shares are small: 0.5% in Aguadilla, unchanged, and 0.6% in Arecibo, down from 0.9%. With shares this small, a handful of loans either way moves the figure. In Mayagüez its share rose to 0.3% from 0.0%.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 16.7% of its loans, near the 17.6% at similar lenders. All its loans were in majority-minority neighborhoods, against 40.2% at similar lenders; it lends only in Puerto Rico, where it first reported in 2003.
