Breco Federal Credit Union, a Baton Rouge credit union, lends for purposes other than buying a home: of its 22 loans in 2025, 77.3% were for other purposes and 18.2% for home improvement.
It made no home-purchase loans in 2025, and refinances were 4.5% of the total. Every loan was conventional. Its typical loan was $75,000, smaller than the $100,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans).
Its loans rose 22% in 2025, from 18 to 22, while similar lenders fell 5%. Its record swings from year to year: 31 loans in 2023, 23 in 2020 and 1 in 2019. At this size a few loans make the difference, so the rise says little about a trend.
