Our analysis, 2025
WoodTrust Bank, of Wisconsin Rapids, raised its loans by 54% in 2025, faster than nearly nine in ten similar lenders, though it still makes far fewer than it did in 2020.
Its loans rose from 48 to 74, while similar lenders (state member banks making between half and twice as many loans) grew 8% and the whole market 10%. The rise comes after a long slide, from 320 loans in 2020 to 44 in 2023.
Purchases made up 73.0% of its loans and refinances only 10.8%, and every loan was conventional. Its typical loan, $200,000, was a little larger than the $175,000 at similar lenders.
Its share of the Wausau market rose from 0.6% to 2.0%, putting it ninth of 196 lenders, behind Covantage Credit Union at the top. Shares are measured in dollars, and its dollar volume nearly tripled, from $12.8 million to $37.2 million, much faster than its loan count. A few large loans may account for much of the gain.
Only 6.8% of its loans went to low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods, against 17.0% at similar lenders, lower than at nearly nine in ten of them. Its share of LMI borrowers, 24.5%, sits a little below the middle. Much of its lending is in rural Wisconsin, which may hold fewer such neighborhoods, and on 74 loans a few loans move these figures.
Similar lenders: same lender type, originations between half and twice the lender's in the data year. Written from the 2025 HMDA data and checked figure by figure against it.
