Western National Bank, a small Nebraska lender, grew its mortgage lending by almost a fifth in 2025 while similar banks stood still, and its typical loan got smaller.
The bank made 38 loans in 2025, up 19% from 32. Similar lenders, national banks making between half and twice as many loans, fell 1%, while the whole market grew 10%. It filed no reports from 2018 to 2022, gaps in the record rather than years without loans.
Seven in ten of its loans, 70.4%, were in low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods, against 17.2% at similar lenders. Yet none went to LMI borrowers, after half did in 2024. With only 38 loans, a handful can swing these shares hard, and how incomes were reported may matter as much as any change in lending.
Its typical loan was $125,000, down from $195,000 and below the $175,000 at similar lenders. Refinances made up 50.0% of its loans and every loan was conventional.
In Lincoln, one of its largest markets, its share fell from 0.3% to 0.1%, leaving it 112th of 249 lenders; Lincoln FSB of Nebraska leads. Its smaller loans are one possible reason: across all its markets it lent $6.6 million, against $6.8 million in 2024, though it made more loans.
