The Stock Exchange Bank, Caldwell, Kansas lends far more in poorer neighborhoods than similar banks, but its lending shrank sharply in 2025.
Lending in poorer places
Similar lenders here are state member banks making between half and twice as many loans. Of the bank's loans, 41.7% went to poorer neighborhoods (low- and moderate-income, or LMI, tracts), against 16.5% at those peers, higher than almost all of them. Its share in majority-minority neighborhoods was 15.1%, against 6.2%.
Fewer lower-income borrowers
Its borrowers' incomes tell a different story: 15.0% had low or moderate incomes, against 27.0% at similar banks. A borrower's income and a neighborhood's are measured separately, so a lender can serve many poorer tracts without many lower-income borrowers. Refinances, 57.5% of its loans, may also play a part, since they go to people who already own a home.
A sharp fall
The bank made 73 loans, against 103 in 2024, a fall of 29%, while similar banks grew by 9%. Its growth was lower than almost every peer's. It filed no report for 2020 or 2021, gaps in the record rather than years without lending. With so small a book, a few loans either way make a large change.
A smaller share in Wichita
In Wichita, its largest market, it ranked 80 of 367 and its share fell from 0.5% to 0.2%. It has lent there since 2012, the year of its first report. The fall in its lending, from 103 loans to 73, may account for most of the lost share.
Similar lenders: same lender type, originations between half and twice the lender's in the data year.
