The Denison State Bank is a Topeka-area lender of small loans, ranked 18 of 236 in that market, whose 2025 volume grew in step with similar banks.
Its 112 loans were 8% more than the year before. Similar lenders, other state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans, grew 9%, which puts it near the middle of them. It made 292 loans in 2020 and has made between 104 and 168 a year since 2022.
Its share of Topeka lending fell from 1.8% to 1.5%, though its own lending rose from $17.4 million to $19.4 million. Rivals growing faster could account for the fall. Capitol Federal Savings Bank leads the market, with Rocket Mortgage second.
Its typical loan was $130,000, against $175,000 at similar lenders, smaller than at about three in four of them. Home improvement and other purposes made up a quarter of its loans, at 8.0% and 17.0%, and such loans may be smaller than purchases.
Only 4.1% of its loans were in low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods, against 18.3% at similar lenders and 13.5% for the bank a year earlier. Its five counties may hold few such neighborhoods, and in a year of 112 loans the drop may reflect which neighborhoods happened to borrow. Yet 32.5% of its loans went to LMI borrowers, more than at about two-thirds of similar lenders.
