Texas Gulf Bank makes far bigger home loans than banks of its size: its typical loan, $375,000, is about double theirs.
Its typical loan was larger than at nearly nine in ten similar lenders, national banks making between half and twice as many loans, whose typical loan was $175,000. A quarter of its loans, 25.0%, were jumbo (larger than the conforming limit), against 3.1% at similar banks. Purchases made up 58.1% of its lending and refinances 23.3%.
None of its 43 loans went to a borrower with a low or moderate income, against 24.5% at similar banks. Loans this large may go mostly to higher-income households, which could explain it. Its lending in poorer neighborhoods, 18.6%, was close to similar banks' 16.7%, and majority-minority neighborhoods took 23.3%, against 8.2%.
It made 43 loans, up 23%, while similar banks did not grow at all; that was faster than about seven in ten of them. It filed no reports from 2020 to 2022, a gap in the record rather than years without lending. It made 69 loans in 2018.
Houston is its largest market. It has lent there since at least 1990 and ranks 240 of 929 lenders; United Wholesale Mortgage and Rocket Mortgage lead. In 2025 it first lent in Miami and Tyler.
