Synergy Federal Credit Union is a San Antonio lender spread thinly across Texas, and more than half its loans go to majority-minority neighborhoods.
All its lending is in Texas, but across 27 counties and eight metros. In San Antonio, its largest market, where it has lent since 1991, it ranks 199 of 669 lenders. United Wholesale Mortgage leads there. Its share rose from 0.0% to 0.1% in San Antonio and from 0.1% to 0.2% in Corpus Christi.
Majority-minority neighborhoods took 53.5% of its loans in 2025, against 9.2% for similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans). That is higher than at nearly nine in ten of them, and up from 44.7% a year earlier. The Texas metros it serves, led by San Antonio, are a plausible reason.
Home purchases made up 44.8% of its loans. Home improvement took 20.7%, refinances 18.4% and other purposes 16.1%. All its loans were conventional, none insured by the Federal Housing Administration or guaranteed by a veterans' or rural-housing program.
It made 87 loans, up 2% from 85, slower than the 7% of similar lenders and the market's 10%. Its lending had fallen from 198 loans in 2020 and 134 in 2022. Its dollar lending rose faster, from $14.1 million to $19.9 million, because its typical loan grew from $105,000 to $175,000, larger than at most similar lenders.
