St. Charles Bank & Trust Company, a Chicago-area bank, makes big loans across a dozen states, with a typical loan more than three times its peers'.
Its typical loan was $585,000, against $180,000 at similar lenders, national banks making between half and twice as many loans. That was larger than at more than nine in ten of them. Jumbo loans, those larger than the conforming limit, made up 30.7% of its lending, against 2.9% at the typical peer.
