Southwest Louisiana Credit Union, a small refinance lender in Lake Charles, made 30% more home loans in 2025, faster growth than most similar credit unions managed.
It made 78 loans, up from 60 in 2024. Similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans, grew by a typical 7%, and the whole market by 10%; its growth was higher than about three-quarters of them. Its lending swings: loans peaked at 153 in 2022, then fell for two years.
Two-thirds of its loans were refinances and 32.1% home purchases. Every loan was conventional, with no government backing. Its typical loan, $80,000, has not moved in five years and sits below the $95,000 typical of its peers.
Manufactured homes made up 17.9% of its loans. The typical similar credit union made none, and its share was higher than at more than nine in ten of them. Few credit unions its size serve that end of the housing market.
Its share of lending in Lake Charles rose from 0.6% to 1.0%, putting it 31 of 208 lenders there. It has lent in the area since 1991, and in 2012 it merged with another credit union, whose filings count in the competition figures. United Wholesale Mortgage led the market.
