Securityplus Federal Credit Union, a Baltimore credit union, makes far larger loans than its peers and lends much more in majority-minority neighborhoods.
Its typical loan was $465,000 in 2025, against $100,000 at similar credit unions, those making between half and twice as many loans. Only a few in a hundred peers lend more per loan. Its jumbo share, loans larger than the conforming limit, was 4.2%; the typical peer made none. Its typical rate, 5.50%, was lower than at nearly all of them.
Loans rose 52%, to 105, against 8% for the typical peer and 10% for the market. The record swings: 197 loans in 2023, then 69 in 2024. Whether 2025 marks a new level or another swing is an open question.
Some 40.0% of its loans went to majority-minority neighborhoods, against 9.6% at peers, higher than at about four in five. Its share in poorer neighborhoods, 20.2%, was also above the 17.2% at peers. Yet only 21.9% went to low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers, against 29.8%; its large loans may suit buyers with higher incomes.
It lent in 16 states and 23 metros. In 2025 it first lent in Boston, Hartford and Atlanta.
