Indianhead Credit Union, a rural Wisconsin lender, nearly tripled its loans in 2025 after four years of decline, but is still short of its 2020 peak.
It made 76 loans in 2025, up 192% from 26, while similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) grew 7%. The jump reverses a fall from 106 in 2020 to 26 in 2024. Since its first report in 2018, only 2020 was higher.
More than half its loans, 55.3%, were for purposes other than buying, refinancing or improving a home; refinancing took 30.3% and purchases 13.2%. Its typical loan was $80,000, against $95,000 at similar lenders.
Low- and moderate-income borrowers took 39.5% of its loans, more than at three-quarters of similar lenders. Yet only 2.6% of its loans were in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, against 17.4%, lower than at almost all of them. Its lending sits in eight counties, mostly in rural Wisconsin, and a footprint that small may contain few such neighborhoods.
Rural Wisconsin is its largest market, where it ranks 180 of 659 lenders. Across the border its share of the Duluth market rose to 0.1%, and in 2025 it made its first loans in rural Minnesota.
