Great Basin Federal Credit Union, a Reno credit union, lends mainly for home improvement and other purposes rather than for buying homes.
Home improvement made up 57.7% of its loans and other purposes 25.0%; purchases and refinances were small. Every loan was conventional. Such loans can be small, and its typical loan was $75,000, against $95,000 at similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans.
Its typical rate was 7.75%, against 6.75% at the typical similar lender, higher than about nine in ten of them. Home-improvement and other-purpose loans can carry higher rates than loans to buy a home, and they make up most of its lending, which may account for the gap. None of its loans was higher-priced (a rate well above the average for similar loans).

It lends in two counties in one metro area. In Reno, where it has lent since at least 1990, its share held at 0.1%, ranking 109 of 325 lenders; Guild Mortgage Company leads with $464.9M. Only 7.7% of its loans went to poorer neighborhoods (low- and moderate-income tracts), against 18.0% at peers, but with 52 loans in two counties that is a handful.
