Bank CMG, a Wisconsin bank renamed in 2025, has gone west. It grew 36% to 114 loans, spread into California and made loans far larger than similar lenders'.
Its loans rose 36%, faster than about four in five similar lenders (state member banks making between half and twice as many loans), whose typical growth was 8%. The count is still far below the 558 loans of 2020. It bottomed out at 68 in 2023.
It lent in 9 states and 17 metros. By volume its largest market was Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, which it entered in 2024, and it first lent in Peoria and Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura in 2025. Its typical loan was $380,000, against $175,000 at peers, higher than nine in ten of them. Jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) were 14.0% of its lending, against 1.3%.
In Peoria, in its first year, it ranked 22 of 289 lenders with 0.8%. Its share in Milwaukee-Waukesha rose. In Madison it fell from 0.5% to 0.3%, possibly as its lending moved toward other states.
Borrowers with low and moderate incomes (LMI) took 5.7% of its loans, down from 14.8% in 2024. At similar lenders the figure was 27.2%, so it was lower than nearly all of them. Its larger loans and its lending in high-cost California markets are possible reasons.
