Our analysis, 2025
America's First Network Credit Union, a small Connecticut lender, mostly lends on homes its members already own, and it lends far more in poorer and majority-minority neighborhoods than similar credit unions do.
Home-improvement loans made up 46.8% of its lending and other purposes 31.9%. Purchase loans were just 6.4%. So its loans are small: the typical one was $85,000, against $95,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans).
Some 29.8% of its loans went to poorer neighborhoods (low- and moderate-income, or LMI, tracts), against 17.4% at similar lenders. That is higher than about four in five of them. In majority-minority neighborhoods the share was 27.7%, against 9.6%. Both shares rose from 2024.
It made 47 loans, down 19% from 2024, while similar lenders grew 4%. Its first reported year, 2023, had 36. At this size a handful of loans moves the total a lot, so one year's fall says little.
In Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford it ranked 282 of 464 lenders; Liberty Bank led. In New Haven it ranked 222 of 392, behind leader Rocket Mortgage. In 2025 it made its first loans in non-metro Vermont, Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC and Springfield, MA.
