Qualstar Credit Union lends mainly for home improvement and refinancing, and its loans rose by 26% in 2025 as it recovered from a sharp fall.
Home improvement made up 43.0% of its loans and refinances 30.6%; purchases were only 7.0%. Its typical loan, $105,000, matched that at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans). Its typical rate, 6.99%, matched theirs too.
Its loans fell from 547 in 2021 to 102 in 2023 and have risen since. Last year they grew 26%, to 372, against 7% at peers and 10% across the market, faster than at about three in four peers. They remain below 2021.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 38.1% of its loans, up from 21.4% in 2024 and higher than at more than four in five peers, where the share was 27.5%. Poorer neighborhoods (LMI tracts) took 28.0%, against 15.5%, a higher share than at more than nine in ten.
Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue is its largest market, where it has lent since at least 1990. It ranks 158 of 597 there, and Boeing Employees' Credit Union leads. In Mount Vernon-Anacortes it ranks 74 of 213, with 0.2% of the market, up from 0.1%.
