Petefish, Skiles, & Company Bank, an Illinois bank, relies on rural housing loans backed by the Department of Agriculture far more than almost any similar lender.
A rural government-backed book
Loans guaranteed by the Department of Agriculture's Rural Housing Service (RHS) made up 11.2% of its lending. Most similar lenders, state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans, make none, and its share was higher than at almost all of them. The share has about doubled from 5.7% in 2020.
Growing faster than peers
It made 375 loans in 2025, up 22% from 308, while similar lenders grew 9%; that was faster than at about four in five of them. Its typical loan, $125,000, was smaller than at about four in five peers, where it was $185,000.
More lower-income borrowers
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 37.1% of its loans, against 28.3% at similar lenders, higher than at more than four in five. In 2020 the share was 23.0%. Its RHS lending may be part of the reason; the data do not say.
Rooted in rural Illinois
Non-metro Illinois is its largest market, where it ranked 16 of 572. In Springfield, IL it ranked 29 of 217 with 0.8%, unchanged; INB led. In Champaign-Urbana, IL its share rose.
