Peoples State Bank is losing ground in Wausau, its home market since at least 1990, as it makes fewer loans in a growing market.
The bank made 276 loans in 2025, 20% fewer than a year earlier. Similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans) grew 8%, and the whole market 10%. It filed no report for 2021, a gap in the record rather than a year without lending; it made 1,320 loans in 2020.
Its share of the Wausau market fell to 2.0% from 3.6%, though it still ranks 12th of 196 lenders. Covantage Credit Union leads. The drop may simply follow its smaller volume, through fewer applications or a choice to lend less. Which rival picked up the business is not clear from these figures. In Milwaukee-Waukesha its share held at 0.2%.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 33.9% of its loans, up from 24.3% a year earlier and higher than at about three-quarters of similar lenders. Majority-minority neighborhoods took 14.1%, against 6.5% at its peers.
Every loan it made was conventional, and none was higher-priced (a rate well above the average for similar loans); at similar lenders 2.0% were. Two-thirds of its loans financed home purchases. Its typical loan, $205,000, was larger than its peers' $175,000.
