Financial Plus Credit Union, an Illinois credit union lending in 12 counties, made 84% more loans in 2025, growing faster than about nine in ten credit unions its size.
It made 213 loans, up from 116. Similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) grew 7% and the whole market 10%. In 2023 it made just 83 loans, so the past two years have more than reversed that low. Its dollar total rose to $36.8 million from $18.9 million.
Purchases made up 55.4% of its loans and refinancing 44.1%; every loan was conventional. Its typical loan, $145,000, was larger than at about three-quarters of similar lenders. Its typical rate, 5.75%, was lower than at more than nine in ten of them, where it was 6.75%.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods took 5.2% of its loans, against 16.5% at similar lenders, and LMI borrowers 19.4%, against 27.9%. It made no loans in majority-minority neighborhoods. Its narrow footprint, one state and 12 counties with non-metro Illinois its largest market, and its larger loans are possible reasons.
It first lent in Kankakee, IL, in 2025, ranking 62 of 206 lenders with 0.3% of the market. In non-metro Illinois it ranked 27 of 572.
