CoreFirst Bank & Trust makes small loans, about half of them for home improvement and other purposes, and lends more in poorer neighborhoods than most similar banks.
Home improvement made up 25.6% of its loans and other purposes 23.9%, beside purchases at 32.2%. Its typical loan, $95,000, was among the lowest tenth of similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans), where it was $175,000.
Its typical rate, 8.00%, was higher than the 6.75% at similar lenders. Home-improvement and other-purpose loans, nearly half its lending, could account for most of that difference. Its higher-priced share (a rate well above the average for similar loans), 1.9%, was the same as theirs.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 38.3% of its loans, against 28.1% at similar lenders. LMI areas took 26.3%, against 17.0%. Both shares were higher than at about four in five peers. Its majority-minority share, 13.2%, was about double their 6.6%.
It made 289 loans, down 28%, while similar lenders grew 8%. Its dollar volume still rose, to $65.5 million from $59.2 million, so the fall may have come mostly in smaller loans. Its Topeka share fell 1.2 points to 1.9%, while in Lawrence it rose 1.3 points to 1.4%. That may reflect where its 2025 loans fell rather than a retreat from Topeka.
