Our analysis, 2025
Community Bank is a top-ten mortgage lender in Topeka, where its share edged up in 2025, but it makes about a third as many loans as it did in 2020.
It ranked 10 of 236 lenders in Topeka, where it has lent since 2000, and its share rose 0.2 points to 2.5%. Elsewhere it is a minor presence: it ranked 450 of 659 in Kansas City.
Originations rose 4% to 117, against 8% for similar lenders (state member banks making between half and twice as many loans) and 10% for the whole market. The bank made 330 loans in 2020 and 263 in 2021, and has made between 113 and 117 a year since 2023. Fewer refinances could account for much of the drop.
Purchases made up 48.7% of its loans and refinances 45.3%. Every loan was conventional, with none backed by a government agency. Its typical loan, $185,000, was a little larger than peers' $175,000.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods took 16.2% of its loans, against 16.5% at peers, and majority-minority areas 5.1%, against 5.3%. Both shares fell from 27.9% and 12.4% a year earlier. At about 117 loans a year, a handful of loans can move them, and the change may reflect where its borrowers happened to buy or refinance.
Similar lenders: same lender type, originations between half and twice the lender's in the data year. Written from the 2025 HMDA data and checked figure by figure against it.
