Azura Credit Union, a Topeka lender of small home-improvement loans, made 69% fewer loans in 2025, a steeper fall than at almost every similar credit union.
Home improvement made up 52.1% of its loans and other purposes 33.1%. Purchases were just 0.8%. Its typical loan, $55,000, was about half the $105,000 at similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans, and among the lowest tenth.
Its loans fell 69% to 121, while similar lenders grew 8%. Its count has swung before: from 393 in 2022 to 174 in 2023, then back to 387 in 2024. The data do not show the cause. A change in the home-improvement and other lending that makes up most of its business is one possibility.
In Topeka, where it has lent since at least 1990, its share fell to 0.5% from 2.8%, and it ranked 39 of 236 lenders. The drop follows its own fall in loans.
Low- and moderate-income borrowers took 38.6% of its loans, against 29.1% at similar lenders, more than at about three in four. None of its loans was higher-priced, meaning a rate well above the average for similar loans; at peers 2.9% were.
