Gulf Coast Bank and Trust Company is the leading lender in New Orleans-Metairie, a home-purchase bank with far more government-backed loans than similar lenders.
It ranked 1 of 371 lenders in New Orleans-Metairie, 2 of 197 in Hammond, behind DSLD Mortgage, and 3 of 277 in Slidell-Mandeville-Covington. Its shares slipped in all three, by 0.4 points to 6.9% in New Orleans and 0.5 points to 6.5% in Hammond; growth by other lenders is one possible reason.
Home purchases were 71.0% of its loans. FHA loans (insured by the Federal Housing Administration) were 16.6%, against 2.6% at similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans), a higher share than at about nine in ten of them; VA loans (guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs) were 3.8%, against 0.8%. Its higher-priced share (a rate well above the average for similar loans) was 3.3%, against 1.4%; its much larger FHA share is a possible reason that could account for most of the difference.

Originations rose 3% to 1,587, while similar lenders grew 12% and the whole market 10%. That is about half its 3,300 loans of 2020. Already first in its largest market, it may have less room to add share there.
