Our analysis, 2025
Trustmark Bank is still the largest lender in Jackson, Mississippi, but its share there fell to 10.5% from 12.0% as its loans slipped 1% in a market that grew 10%.
Originations of 8,002 compare with 15,498 in 2020, and growth was slower than about three-quarters of similar lenders, whose loans rose 9%.
It ranks first of 306 lenders in Jackson, ahead of BankPlus and Cadence Bank, but gave up 1.5 points of share. Elsewhere its shares held roughly steady, at 1.9% in Birmingham and 2.5% in Huntsville. Local competitors growing faster, or the bank choosing not to match their pricing, could explain the loss.
Similar lenders are state member banks making between half and twice as many loans. FHA loans (insured by the Federal Housing Administration) were 17.2% of its loans against 5.6%, the highest of the group; VA loans (guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs) were 6.6% and RHS loans (guaranteed by the Department of Agriculture's Rural Housing Service) 1.3%, both higher than about nine in ten. Its conventional share of 74.9% was the lowest.
Its typical loan of $175,000 was lower than about four in five similar lenders', against $220,000, and jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) were 2.7%, the lowest. LMI (low- and moderate-income) borrowers took 28.7% of loans against 24.7%, a little above the middle. Its government-loan focus and lending outside the largest cities may explain both.
