JPMorgan Chase Bank made 94,243 loans in 2025, up 17% while the whole market grew 10%, yet still well under half the 274,448 it made in 2021.
Faster than the market, from a lower base
Originations rose 17% in 2025, against 10% for the whole market, after falling from 274,448 in 2021 to 64,086 in 2023. With refinancing now 28.4% of its loans, the earlier peak may have rested on refinancing that has since faded. Its growth was faster than about two-thirds of similar lenders (national banks making between an eighth and eight times as many loans), whose typical growth was 10%.
A sudden jump in loans bought
It bought 212,751 loans in 2025, against 20,456 in 2024, more than twice the loans it made itself. A bulk portfolio purchase could explain a jump of this size.
First in the largest coastal markets
It ranks first in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago and second in San Francisco and Miami, all served since before 1990. Wells Fargo Bank is second in New York.
More lending in LMI and majority-minority areas than in 2020
Loans in LMI (low- and moderate-income) areas were 19.4% of its lending, up from 10.7% five years earlier, and in majority-minority areas 36.7%, up from 20.0%. Both fell from 2024 (23.8% and 45.8%), which could reflect a change in which markets it lent in during the year. Both remain higher than about nine in ten similar lenders.
