Houghton State Bank makes very small loans, a typical $35,000, and most of its 2025 lending went to low- and moderate-income neighbourhoods, a far higher share than similar banks.
Its typical loan was $35,000 against $165,000 for similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans), the lowest in the group. All 45 loans together came to $2.6 million, less than almost every similar lender. Loans this small may reflect low house prices in the rural Iowa towns it serves.
