Bank of Hawaii grew faster than any similar lender in 2025 and is the largest lender in Urban Honolulu, though it made about a third as many loans as five years earlier.
Originations rose 63% to 1,974, the fastest growth among similar lenders (state member banks making between half and twice as many loans), whose typical change was 2%. Its Urban Honolulu share rose from 6.9% to 10.8%, first of 223 lenders. In Kahului-Wailuku its share fell from 7.8% to 5.0%. Five years earlier it made 5,845 loans.
Its typical loan of $355,000 was higher than almost all similar lenders', against $195,000. Its typical rate of 6.00% was lower than about nine in ten of theirs, and none of its loans were higher-priced (a rate well above the average for similar loans).
It turned down 3.9% of first-lien home-purchase applications on owner-occupied homes, against 7.0% for similar lenders, lower than about three in four of them. For refinance applications it turned down 12.4%, against 14.2%, a little lower than most. These rates leave out its home-improvement and other-purpose lending, a third of its loans.
23.2% of its loans were in LMI (low- and moderate-income) tracts, higher than about nine in ten similar lenders and up from 11.3% five years ago, and 91.7% were in majority-minority tracts, which may reflect lending almost entirely in Hawaii. But 15.6% went to LMI borrowers, against 26.8%, lower than about nine in ten; high home prices may explain the gap.
